Well, a country house ain't no place for a lady with eyes Those yolks are magnets, don't you dare keep her inside She can see all the lights Patent Eighteen Sixty-Five And a barristers mansion don't allow for expansion of sight Well, a country house ain't no place for a lady with a nose, Olfactory wonders, the bovine pungence of toes She's not the type To sit sniffing bouquets all night And this barristers mansion don't allow her to smell like she might Well, a country house ain't no place for a lady with a tongue The boredom of bland british beef renders it numb And in her dreams She tastes everything that she sees And a barristers mansion ain't no place for thoughts like these Red hens rolling up and down the tracks Hills and Henley, Northfield lines are back Gertrude won't you sit back and relax Meet Mr. Sargent

Lady Agnew, Who knows what for? I knew no oooh Laid of Lochnaw Sends me a shoe Hung on my floor Oily goo Peel off the wall Eyes of galore! Lady Agnew I wanna ride in a jumbo I wanna ride through the golf course I wanna go to the seaside Tonight! I wanna ride in a jumbo Said the Spectre to Gertrude I wanna go to the seaside Tonight! Lady Agnew, Vernon, Gertrude Galloway Queen Pearl in the nude Spectre it came Opened the tune Into her dreams Faintest of "choos" Sown was the seed In Lady Agnew The Spectre slipped and switched the sides Of the Galloway Ladys' sleeping mind Awakens she amongst the gums In a southern world of locomotion!

What's a girl of society Doing under the old gum tree? Gunzel ponders across the field Pocket the pipe and a click of the heel Gertrude don't be rude! Mysterious dusts, and lathered clouds Hanging round my ankles now Petticoats are petty fears Here's a dude and he's looking weird! Gertrude where are you? I'm a long long way from home Not a pen to call my own Not a dream of steam to know In this land of the telegraph pole Gertrude don't be rude!

Gunzelman 02:45
I put dubbin on my boots To keep 'em waterproof 'Cos when I'm out there on the track The rain beats down my back I wear a belt around my waist To keep my pants in place 'Cos when I'm running to the station I don't lose the steeplechase I'm a Gunzelman in a world of traffic Je suis demodee mais je suis dynamique I'm a locomotive guy In an automotive world I wear a tie around my neck To keep the fashion trends in check And I tie a windsor knot Lest my soul begin to rot And I've got a secret power That keeps 'em running on the hour I'm the Jehovah of the rails Allah of the tracks I'm a Gunzelman in a world of traffic Je suis demodee mais je suis dynamique I'm a locomotive guy In an automotive world

Over several nights I dreamt a dream Of water turning into steam And diesel following from that And paintings turning into fact Where are your legs? What is your name? What is this tree from whence I came? The name I take is Gunzelman My legs are in another land I am a long long way from home And Andrews nowhere to be known I know not of the home you speak The narrow gauge is at your feet Shall I follow down the path? Beneath the shadows of the bath? Do take my hand and face the wind Hear the submerged railway sing!

Ten sighs higher, Vision denies her, Locks of secret, Blues of desire, Furs entail such winds which transpire, Heavenly Ten sighs deeper, Bends of my sleep, where Sails unfurl as Locks of her curls Intensify such dreamward arrival Presently Quell this temper, Send for the gentle, Mirror motion Run with the devil Spurs and branches, hills of my distant Memory Ten sighs higher, No vision clearer No such lyre Delved any nearer No sound sweeter, nor tones indeed, her Sensually

Iron Shoes 03:04
Contorted shapes that greet me, Proceed to fly discreetly, Take another dive 'til the shower subsides Contented and invented, Seven-fifty millimented, Three on a two and a broken carafe This, I understand, is just one and a half And I know just where I'm going Going where the junctions overflowing And you can break my gauge But you can't take my iron shoes All crossings ain't so level Since I made this pact with the devil Cut off all your hair and you'll fly through the air! Once I knew a guy named Gunzel Had no legs yet ran through the jungle Showed me to the horse that will run on a course Now I am bound by these tracks on the ground And I know just where I'm going Going where the junctions overflowing And you can break my gauge But you can't take my iron shoes

Strangely, it seems That I can't understand whether She's in my dreams Or tugging on to my leather Fantastic speeds I'm hanging on to that letter The breeze whispers yet tells me not where she's gone Strangely, it seems I met her under a gum tree She shed her leaves And rode the rails beside me Across the seas 'cross the mountains and mallee The breeze whispered across the tracks that we made Redhens rolling up and down the track Gertrude won't you sit back and relax Strangely, it seems I lost her far from the valley Far from the streams And all the dreams of the mallee All that steam All that we carried The breeze whispers but tells me not where I'm found Redhens rolling up and down the track Gertrude won't you sit back and relax

In the tradition of my forebears I keep things outta sight Rearrange the tune into a simpler time Subversive wishing I pull the venetians You gotta know respect, pontificates the lump above the bloody deck Lieutenant fission, I run the dish here Cure me like meat Become to me a vessel of a continental spring In the tradition of my forebears The pink lays in the tub I see the spectre silent as I shrug him off Lethargic ointment Contain me tightly Within a certain frame, A lovers name to crane my eyes delightfully On the condition, That you don't leave, dear A diesel powered ride, will keep us side by side into the night In the tradition of my forebears, I'll keep this in my mind, Barricade, away to breathe another time

about

"Gertrude" was born of dreams of narrow gauge railways, inland oceans, oilskins and society beauties. The visions became songs shakily assembled of ringing sixths and sevenths.

In August of 2015, amid the sublime splendour of the Telfer family property east of Hawker in the Flinders Ranges, The Maraby Band got down to documenting these songs properly, the music coagulating into a cohesive canon of clarinets, crashes and crying guitars.

These songs are not tawdry Australian parochialism, they are pure fantasy of an alternate “rêver” of the outback; of mallee, mountain, steam, dreams and love.
